If the arrow remains greyed out on a video, it means that downloading has been disabled by the site. There are a number of add-ons which you can install to download youtube videos, but I don't recognize the one you described. You'd have to ask your friend what the name of it is.

Try opening about:config and setting extensions.blocklist.enable to false. You might need to kill Firefox via the application manger OS settings to have the preference take effect.

If Firefox does not crash regularly then there is not a need to save sessions every ten seconds as this can also be one of the reasons why YouTube videos stutter in Firefox. The fix is simple: Enter about:config in the Firefox address bar, filter for the term browser.sessionstore.interval, double-click that term and enter a new time for the session restore interval.

History lets you sync the extension's history of watched YouTube videos with the Firefox browsing history. This is not required usually, but if you run into issues somehow, you can run a manual sync job at any time using the option. The add-on may sync the data from a YouTube account as well if you are signed in.

All right. I've reinstalled one last time and now the dialog doesn't become grayed out anymore. I'm going to try it again tonight. I have a suspicion that I originally got this glitch when I ran firefox at home where my company's proxy server was inaccessible/unneeded, while the proxy settings in Firefox were set (inherited from IE).
