Usually North is to the top on Google maps when you are just viewing the map. You may change the orientation to show the direction your phone is pointing, too, by touching the “compass” icon. This is very useful when following directions to your destination. Touching the compass again will return you to a standard view.
True North on Google Maps is not shown, but for a normal Mercator projection, grid north and true north will coincide and it will follow any vertical line (or meridian) to the top of the map. Copyright © 2009 - 2021 All Rights Reserved Barcelona Field Studies Centre S.L.
